UNITED WE STAND!

        WATER & LIGHT NEWS

May, 2008

From the General Manager’s Desk

By Rick Skifton

It’s certainly no secret that we are in a recession regardless of what the “experts” are spewing. The value of the dollar continues to decline while energy prices continue to soar. Our wizards in Washington seem oblivious to what is happening because they just keep fighting between their political parties while seemingly ignoring what is going on with the economy. The bills that are being talked about in congress will have huge impacts on our already strained electric bills if they are moved forward. Common sense must prevail in Washington while dealing with these energy issues but previous history has proven that common sense and Washington are rarely used in the same sentence. In my opinion I believe the simplest solution to our problem would be to require that anyone running for any Washington Office must have an IQ of at least two digits in order to serve.

Drips, Drops & Dribbles

By Mike Zarn

Our soggy April will be the wettest recorded. The 6.20 inches we received this month has topped the old mark of 5.72 inches set in 1954.  Our temperatures have been averaging 2.9 degrees above normal.

From 1895 to 2006 the precipitation trend shows an increase from 30.18 inches in 1895 to 32.42 inches in 2006.  During the same period, temperatures have increased 1.1 degrees.  The largest variation comes in the winter with a 2.7 degree increase in temperature with no increase in precipitation.

The forecast for the next two weeks is for above normal temperatures with below normal precipitation.  This is to be followed by normal temperatures with a slight increase in moisture.  The rest of the summer is expected to be normal.
